General Information

  • A valid passport is required for entry into Mozambique (ensure that it is still valid for at least 6 months after date of entry and there are two blank pages in it).
  • Unabridged birth certficates need to be presented at the border when travelling with minors (children under 18 years of age) as well as an affidavit if both biological parents are not present.
  • Please ensure that you have your vehicle papers or police clearance papers and let us know if you require any further information regarding customs and excise allowances.
  • You will need the original or certified copy of your vehicle registration papers, if the vehicle is not in your name then a letter from the owner of the vehicle, a letter from your Insurance Company stating that the vehicle is insured out of SA, a temporary drivers licence as well as 3rd Party Insurance which can be purchased at the border.
  • Vehicle Entry into Mozambique costs MZN 750 / ZAR 200 and this must be paid in cash.
  • A third party insurance is compulsory before your vehicle can enter Mozambique – whilst this can be done at the border, we recommend that you obtain it online prior to arrival (www.hollsure.co.za).
  • SADC residents do not need a visa to enter Mozambique. A visa fee of USD 50 per person is payable for entry of non-SADC residents.

Kosi Bay Border: opens 8am – closes 5pm daily.

Komatipoort Border: open 24 hours

  • Fully Vaccinated Persons can enter Mozambique and South Africa by producing their Covid Vaccination Certificate.
  • If you are not fully vaccinated then you will need to show a negative PCR test that is not older than 72 hours old.
  • PCR tests can be done at any Ampath or Lancet laboratory in South Africa.
  • On return to SA, unvaccinated persons can have a rapid test done on the SA side for R300 (Payable in Cash).
  • Ponta Mamoli is officially listed as being a malaria area, although cases are rare, especially with the sea breeze.
  • Guests should consult their doctor for any advice and about appropriate malaria prophylaxes.
  • Please use preventative techniques even in combination with malaria prophylaxes, such as mosquito repellent sprays at night and wear long pants.
  • Mozambique Vodacom is found throughout most of the area and there is full 3G coverage at Blue Waves.
  • We recommend that you purchase a Vodacom sim card in Ponta Malongane or Ponta do Ouro should you need mobile communications.
  • There is complimentary WiFi at the Villa. 
  • The local currency is Meticais, but South African Rands are also welcomed.

  • South African Rands are accepted as a payment currency at all shops, filling stations, restaurants etc and the rate is generally accepted as ZAR1 = MZN4

  • The BCI bank (local Mozambican bank) has an ATM that is situated in the village in Ponta do Ouro. The daily withdrawal limit for cash at the ATM is R2000 per day and the ATM only gives the Mozambique currency.

  • Not all places have card facilities – please ensure you take enough cash with you into Mozambique.
